This was done for the cover of Book 14 of The Book of Imaginary Beasts, an online anthology of themed stories and art. You can view the issue here: [link] .
Ink on sketchpad paper. The actual size of this is quite a bit smaller than the image -- some of the details took a lot of work, but I enjoyed it a lot just the same. I colored this some time later: [link] .
